Project Overview
I led technical strategy, cross-stack integration, and platform evolution for the Digi X-ON IoT Platform, Digi’s device-to-cloud IoT solution spanning cloud services, embedded devices, and gateways for LoRaWAN-based systems.
The platform was originally named X-ON, referring primarily to the cloud and LoRaWAN services. Over time, Digi expanded and redefined X-ON as the X-ON IoT Platform, encompassing X-ON Cloud together with Digi’s embedded devices, edge controllers, and gateways as a unified, ARR-driven IoT solution. This shift reflected a deliberate move from standalone cloud tooling to integrated device-to-cloud systems.
I played a central role in shaping the platform’s architecture, integration patterns, and technical direction, ensuring tight alignment between cloud services and Digi’s embedded and gateway products. This included guiding the evolution of Digi’s proprietary LoRaWAN network server (LNS) and JOIN server stack, defining edge-to-cloud workflows, and reviewing system and code designs to ensure scalability, security, and operational reliability.
X-ON originated as part of Haxiot’s LoRaWAN platform, where I was involved in early system direction. Following Digi’s acquisition of Haxiot, the platform was expanded, re-architected, and scaled, ultimately becoming the X-ON IoT Platform that underpins Digi’s connected IoT offerings today.
Platform Strategy & Role
My focus was ensuring X-ON evolved as a cohesive, scalable platform spanning cloud, edge, and device layers—not just a cloud service. I worked across embedded firmware, edge platforms, gateways, and cloud teams to define how devices should provision, authenticate, exchange data, receive updates, and integrate with customer systems.
Key areas of responsibility included:
Defining technical requirements and feature direction for X-ON IoT Platform integrations with Digi embedded products
Leading architecture and design reviews for new LoRaWAN and device-to-cloud capabilities
Guiding the evolution of Digi’s proprietary LoRaWAN LNS and JOIN server stack
Shaping device provisioning, data routing, payload transformation, and OTA workflows
Driving the initial strategy to integrate X-ON with Digi DRM, enabling expansion across Digi’s OEM portfolio
Aligning platform capabilities with ARR growth, solution packaging, and customer adoption goals
Cross-Stack Integration
A major focus of my work was defining tight, opinionated integration between the X-ON IoT Platform and Digi’s hardware products, including:
Digi XBee-LR devices
Digi XBee Intelligent Edge Controller (IEC)
Digi HX15 / HX20 LoRaWAN gateways
This required establishing consistent edge-to-cloud contracts, provisioning flows, telemetry models, and update mechanisms so that devices and gateways could be deployed with minimal configuration and no LoRaWAN expertise.
The result was a scan-and-go deployment experience, where devices and gateways could be powered on, claimed, configured, and brought online through X-ON with near-zero manual setup.
Impact & Outcomes
Helped evolve X-ON from a cloud-centric LoRaWAN service into a full IoT platform spanning devices, gateways, and cloud
Enabled seamless onboarding of embedded devices, edge controllers, and gateways
Strengthened Digi’s proprietary LoRaWAN LNS/JOIN server capabilities
Reduced deployment friction through auto-connect, auto-configure, and scan-and-go provisioning
Supported Digi’s transition toward ARR-driven IoT solutions, not standalone hardware
Established a scalable foundation for expanding X-ON across Digi’s OEM product portfolio
Technical Scope & Contributions
Platform Architecture: Multi-tenant IoT platform spanning cloud, devices, and gateways
LoRaWAN Stack: Technical leadership for Digi’s proprietary network and JOIN server
Edge-to-Cloud Integration: Provisioning, telemetry, routing, and update workflows
APIs & Data Flow: Guidance on API design, data transformation, and inter-cloud streaming
Embedded Integration: Alignment with constrained devices, edge controllers, and Linux gateways
Security: Secure provisioning, encrypted communications, and role-based access control
Scalability & Reliability: Input into high-availability microservices and elastic scaling
Product & ARR Strategy: Close collaboration with Product on solution-driven growth
Ecosystem Role
The X-ON IoT Platform acts as the central control plane across Digi’s IoT ecosystem:
Devices: XBee-LR
Controllers: XBee Intelligent Edge Controller
Gateways: HX15 / HX20
Cloud: X-ON Cloud and external integrations
Together, these components form a cohesive device → edge → gateway → cloud architecture, enabling Digi to deliver complete IoT solutions rather than disconnected products.
